Get up to speed quickly with this introduction to the risk management and insurance realm. This blended learning course will use real-life scenarios to give the new risk management and insurance leader the necessary fundamentals to successfully begin their career in the insurance world. Whether the leader is directly involved with insurance operations or other operations within the insurance carrier, this course will help them to speak the language of insurance and to see how their functional area is critical to the insurance function.

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Explain the insurance-related functions of an insurance company.
  2. Describe the insurance regulatory structure of the United States.
  3. Discuss the risk management cycle and how insurance fits into a risk management program.
  4. Apply an insurance policy to a simplified loss situation.
  5. Explain critical insurance financial ratios.
  6. Discuss the reasons insurance companies purchase reinsurance.
  7. Differentiate between treaty reinsurance and facultative reinsurance.

This is a blended learning experience. Participants will take part in 8 virtual classroom discussions over a four-week period. Between the virtual classes, participants are expected to complete self-directed work, which should take no more than 1-2 hours.

The course will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting October 6 at 3 pm Eastern.
