The Bar Is Open: Liquor Liability Basics

The Bar Is Open: Liquor Liability Basics

Quick Overview

Host liquor is included, right? Sure. We know that it is, but do we know why? What if the insured needs more than host liquor? Or what about those times when an insurer wants to further restrict liquor liability coverage? This session is all about the insurance implications from when the adult beverages begin to flow. It’s part of our New To Insurance series so you know that it’ll be a fast-paced hour.

If you have done any work with a CGL policy, you know that the ISO CGL coverage form provides coverage for what we all refer to as "host liquor liability", but there is no coverage labeled "host liquor". We also know that the corner bar, the restaurant that serves drinks with their meals, and the wedding party that rented an event space and brought an open bar all need some kind of liquor liability coverage. In this session in our New To Insurance series, we will explore the liquor liability exclusion on the CGL coverage form, the Liquor Liability coverage form, and some endorsements to figure out liquor liability. By the end of this session, you should be able to:

  • Discuss reasons an insurance company would want to change the Liquor Liability exclusion or require Liquor Liability coverage.
  • Describe the Liquor Liability exclusion on the ISO CG 00 01.
  • Discuss several endorsements that can amend the Liquor Liability exclusion.
  • Explain the major coverage points, including some exclusions, on the ISO CG 00 33 (Liquor Liability coverage form).
