Patrick Wraight

Patrick is the Director of Insurance Journal’s Academy of Insurance. As an insurance learning professional, he is passionate about taking the complicated and making it accessible for everyone, especially the insurance community.
He started his insurance career as a commercial underwriter for an MGA that wrote fire departments, ambulance companies, home medical equipment dealers, and other niche markets. It was there that he also started his journey in insurance education by designing and implementing a new underwriter training program.
From there, he moved to one of the largest Florida-based property insurers to become an underwriter trainer. While there, his role expanded beyond classroom and online training to become a learning consultant. He spent time with his customers to determine their learning needs and develop a plan to meet those needs.
Patrick has earned several industry designations:
- CIC (Certified Insurance Counselor)
- ITP (Insurance Training Professional)
- CRM (Certified Risk Manager)
- CISR (Certified Insurance Service Representative)
- AU (Associate in Commercial Underwriting)
- AINS (Associate in General Insurance).
Patrick is also the 2021-22 President of SITE, the Society of Insurance Trainers and Educators.
CGL Master Class - Coverage C and Supplementary Payments
What happens when the injury is small enough that $5,000 or $10,000 would pay for the injured person's bill? Do they really have to file a suit against the insured to get that money? That's where coverage C comes into play. This medical payments coverage makes it possible to handle small claims without a lot of issues. When we've handled medical payments, we will examine a part of the policy that provides for money outside of the liability limits to handle other things, like defense.
Join us in session number six in our CGL Master Class.
CGL Master Class - Coverage B and Selected Exclusions
When most of us think about the CGL policy, we think about the bodily injury and property damage coverage (Coverage A), but there's more to it than that. Sometimes we forget that there is also something called personal and advertising injury that is included on the policy. Coverage B, personal and advertising injury, provides coverage for those offenses that are listed in the definition. Join us as we examine what those offenses are and several exclusions that apply to this coverage.
CGL Master Class - Coverage A and Selected Exclusions
When most of us think about the CGL policy, we usually think about bodily injury and property damage. We all understand that there's more to it than that, but that's what we immediately think about.
Join us as we take apart Coverage A in this session. We plan to look at several exclusions and look for ways to deal with those exclusions.
A Few of Our Favorite (and Least Favorite) Commercial Property Endorsements
In this conversation, Academy Director of Education, Patrick Wraight is joined by Friend of the Academy, Casey Roberts. The topic? Endorsements.
We get a look into the minds of these two insurance nerds as they discuss and debate their favorite (and least favorite) commercial property endorsements.
This is certain to be appointment viewing as they discuss endorsements and take your questions.
CGL Master Class - Additional Insured Endorsements
Your clients are signing contracts more often than you ever wanted to know. Many of those contracts come with insurance requirements. Some request indemnification. Others are asking to add the other party as an additional insured on your client's liability policies.
- What is an additional insured?
- Why would someone want to be an additional insured?
- Why would you add someone as an additional insured?
- What does it really mean to be an additional insured?
These questions and more are answered in this third session in our CGL Master Class. Join us as Academy Director of Education, Patrick Wraight digs into the additional insured.
CGL Master Class - Who is an Insured and Why Do You Care?
Is the new employee that decided to take a swing at a customer an insured on the company's CGL policy?
Is there coverage if an employee takes action to protect property and injures someone in the process?
Join us as we explore who is an insured on a CGL policy with Patrick Wraight, Director of Education for the Academy in this second installment of our CGL Master Class.
CGL Master Class - Liability Exposures
The CGL policy can be complicated. What's the difference between Coverages A, B, and C? What liability exposures are covered?
In this first session of our Commercial General Liability Master Class, we will examine the different liability exposures that a business may face and then look at how the CGL policy might respond to those exposures. Spoiler alert. Sometimes, they aren't covered and the client will need another policy.
Join us as Academy Director Patrick Wraight begins the Commercial General Liability Master Class with this session about liability exposures.
2020 ISO Commercial Auto Changes
Change happens more often than we are comfortable with. It also seems to come along just when we get used to a particular policy form. Well, in 2020 ISO released updates to the Commercial Auto program. Join us as Academy Director Patrick Wraight walks us through the changes and helps us answer the question: what's with these changes and how can I help my clients understand them?
Commercial Property Master Class - Selected Endorsements
We know that the ISO Commercial Property Policy includes an exclusion for ordinance or law. Did you also know that there is an endorsement designed to provide the coverage to fill this exclusion? Did you also know that you can endorse flood as a covered cause of loss onto the commercial property policy? Join us as Academy Director, Patrick Wraight helps us with these and other endorsements.
Commercial Property Master Class - Causes of Loss Forms, Exclusions
One of the first questions that must be addressed in the event of a property loss is what caused the loss?
After the cause of loss is determined, the next question is whether that cause of loss is a covered cause of loss.
In this session, we will dive into commercial property causes of loss forms to discover the difference between a covered cause of loss and an excluded cause of loss and find ways to change them.
